The St. Joseph Parish Mobile Food Locker collects and distributes food to families in need in the greater Sacramento area. The ministry is manned by a group of 20-25 dedicated volunteers who give freely of their time in this worthy endeavor. In addition to accepting non-perishable donations from parishioners, ministry volunteers drive to the Sacramento Food Bank on a weekly basis to pick up an allotment of USDA food for distribution. Once back at the Food Locker warehouse, the food is divided into shopping carts in preparation for distributions at local parishes, which take place on the first three Thursdays of each month.
On average, the Mobile Food Locker distributes ~90 tons of food to ~4,000 families each year. The food distributed has a monetary value of ~$300,000.
In support of the Food Locker, non-perishable food items are collected after all weekend Masses, and are made available to parishioners who have an emergency need.
Additionally, non-perishable foods are provided to Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home in Sacramento on a regular basis. This aid supports homeless pregnant women. These women are able to stay at the home until they deliver, and can find a safe and secure home environment for themselves and their babies.
Your prayers, volunteer activities, and financial support are always appreciated.
